God on the Net: Guide to the Best Sites for Study, Inspiration and Resources, Year 2000
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (June, 1999)
Author: Vernon Blackmore
Average review score:

Great 4 the Net
I have found this book extremly usful...I now wonder how I ever lived without it! I have descovered sites I never knew existed and would never have found with out the help of it!

How do you find God on the Net?
I think it is a generally very interesting book, although there are many excellent Christians sites that are not listed. Some possibly because - by its nature - a printed book is more out-of-date than its online counterpart.

Some of its reviews are rather subjective, but an inevitable bias towards a particular viewpoint will always creep in to any publication - This is not necessarily always a bad thing. A personal poit of reference can help us form our own opinions of Christian web sites.

L.A. Justice
Published in Hardcover by Focus on the Family Pub (January, 1993)
Authors: Robert L. Vernon and Bob Vernon
Average review score:

It's all about him!
I really thought the book was going to be more about the LAPD, instaed I found out that it's a book about Robert Vernon and how everybody tore him apart and why they were all wrong! Well, read it and make your own opinion, but Mr. Vernon please don't write any more books!

Disturbingly excellent record of a tragically serious event
I live in a country where racialism was once institutionalised by law, where politicians and officials connived to conceal the tragic consequences of their laws, and where people were hopelessly divided from and mistrustful of one another. This book reminded me of my own country's failures and of the TV footage of the Rodney King affair. It also reminded me of the large number of commissions of enquiry into mysterious deaths that found "no one to blame".The author is candid, honest and courageous in his presentation of the facts as he has experienced them.

1500 Ways to Escape the Human Jungle
Published in Paperback by New Life Foundation (August, 1978)
Author: Vernon Howard
Average review score:

Mystic answers set out in an idiosyncratic way
The title almost says it all - there are 1500 sentences which represent the "simplified wisdoms of the ages." Similar to the Gideon New Testament bible I have, there is a reading program of suggested sentences for the answers you seek, e.g. FOR PROFOUND IDEAS: 24, 186...FOR BANISHING CONFUSIONS:32,124,.. etc. Most of these sentences repeat the same idea(s): seek self awareness; be true; work on your inner self; seek cosmic truths;and so on. Maybe repetition will create awareness, but at times the sentences read like fortune cookie aphorisms and I get the feeling that the author strained himself in writing as many different sentences as he could. Yes, there is content here but there are more accessible vehicles than these "1500 ways." "A jungle-mind scoffs at the idea that there is another land beyond the jungle" (807)"Everyone who is allergic to reality wastes his life trying to prove he is not allergic" (812)"Rightness does not arise from the habitual mind, but from cosmic comprehension." (1196)."Insight into your mind changes thoughts from noisy dictators into quiet servants."(981) Not all the sentences are like the preceding but you get the idea. There are good ideas here if you can get past the quirky writing. Not Gibran, but if it works for you, why not?

Comparing Constitutions
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (April, 1995)
Authors: Vernon Bogdanor, Bernard Rudden, and Samuel E. Finer
Average review score:

It's just Constitutions, Folks.
This book is about nothing but constitutions. There's a nice explanation about the British Constitution -- necessary because it is unwritten; nothing else about the French, German, Russian, or American constitution is provided but the texts themselves. You're on your own: sink or swim.

On the web you can get copies of constitutions readily. If you didn't have access to the web or a good library, then I could see buying this book. But, if you didn't have access to the web, then you wouldn't be reading this review, either.

Do what thou wilt.

Downsizing the Federal Government: The Management of Public Sector Workforce Reductions (Bureaucracies, Public Administration, and Public Policy)
Published in Paperback by M.E.Sharpe (June, 1998)
Author: Vernon Dale Jones
Average review score:

Are there any real solutions for federal downsizing?
The main contributions the author, Vernon Dale Jones, makes to the study of the bureaucracy in Downsizing the Federal Government: The Management of the Public Sector Workforce Reductions are twofold. First, the author summarizes and contrasts the various attempts made over the past thirty years to reduce the federal bureaucracy. Second, the author provides the reader with an excellent bibliography on the subject of public sector downsizing. Although the author takes great pains to explain the theoretical framework behind the book, the methodology behind his study and the relevance of this work to the field of public administration the reader tends to become distracted by these references and explanations and finds it difficult to identify any relevant practical solutions to the problem of the inevitable decrease of the federal bureaucracy.

Life and Lightning: The Good Things of Lightning
Published in Paperback by Upublish.com (15 November, 1999)
Author: Vernon L. Mangold
Average review score:

Unknown benefits of a destructive natural force
I was generally surprised to learn of the many positive benefits of lightning. I typically associated lightning with destruction and chaos.

The book was written simply enough for a layman (like me!) however, it over simplified the subject matter, in certain points.

Strong points: Brief and factual

Weak points: Poor editing, lack of illustrations, lack of background information.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is seeking a different perspective on the subject of lightning. It offers a different take on the phenomena from standard encyclopedia references.

Magnificent Seven: The Championship Games That Built the Lombardi Dynasty
Published in Hardcover by Triumph Books (September, 2002)
Authors: Bud Lea, Vernon Biever, John Biever, Paul Hornung, and Bart Starr
Average review score:

Packer fans will like this
Bud Lea used his notes and articles published during his years covering the Packers as a Milwaukee newspaperman to put together this book. Also featured is Vernon Biever's excellent photography from the Packer Glory Years.

This is fairly light-weight in content (large print and lots of pictures). But if you were a fan of the Pack during the Lombardi years, you probably will enjoy this book. There are a LOT of photos, many of which I've not previously seen, so the book gives a fairly good feel for the atmosphere at each game.

However I wish the text had been more in depth. The background given for each of the seven games is sketchy at best, unfortunately. There are lots of quotes from the men who played those games, but overall I would have liked more meat. Still, a "good get" for Packer fans.

Supernatural Tales: Excursions into Fantasy
Published in Hardcover by Dufour Editions (September, 1987)
Author: Vernon Lee
Average review score:

Forgotten Author should be republished, reevaluated
This author (real name Violet Paget)seems somewhat forgotten. She was noted in her time (the late 19th and earlier 20th centuries)as a critic of art, architecture and aesthetics. Her friends and admirers included John Singer Sargent, Robert Browning, G B Shaw and Edith Wharton. Her supernatural stories are sometimes found in related anthologies. While probably not masterpieces of the genre, they are at least interesting and have an historical-geographical locale related to Vernon Lee's life and writings. "Prince Alberic and the Snake Lady" deals with a regal youth's infatuation with a family legend, that of a snake women with whom the prince becomes enraptured. "Amour Dure" recounts a Polish student's obsession with a lethal, 16th century Italian seductress. The stories are written with a literate precision which fails to evoke atmosphere. Her language nonetheless evidences intelligence and appreciation of the surroundings (Italy, Spain)in which they are set. Hopefully she will be reappreciated, republished and included more in anthologies of that difficult story form: the supernatural.

Thru the Bible Commentary: 1st and 2nd Thessalonians
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (September, 1995)
Authors: Vernon J. McGee and J. Vernon McGee
Average review score:

Old School Review
Looking around the local Christian bookstore, I wanted a solid commentary on Thessalonians and I did indeed get that. While I read the King James version of the Bible as a kid, I now use the NIV version, so it was a little odd to read the NIV scripture and receive the commentary based on the KJV text, but in a way, it was a good experience. Dr. McGee is solid on his knowledge and views but he's definitely "old school." Not that I can with certainty state what "new school" is, it was obvious that Dr McGee was raised in a different time... In fact, I believe he was born in the early 1900's and passed away in the late eighties. He wrote and spoke like a "grumpy old man" but he was right on the mark at all times. Unfortunately, he spoke with great disdain and frustration on the "current times" (1970-1980's) and I'm certain he would be even more so in today's current state of society (or lack thereof). While this style of commentary was educational and biblically accurate, I think I will be looking for a more modern (albeit, NOT a watered down version) intrepetation/commentary for future studies... Probably something from the Bruce & Stan series...
